Welcome to Yeshivat Maharat

During Birkat HaKohanim, there is a custom to read the refrain: Chalom chalamti, v’ayni yodayha ma hu—I dreamt a dream, but I do not know what it means.

Chalom Chalamti—I dreamt a dream, and it has surpassed my expectations.

Seven years ago Rabbi Avi Weiss and I sent out a call for applications for a new yeshiva, intent on ordaining Orthodox women as spiritual leaders. Today we are a thriving program, with a growing student body, a brilliant faculty, engaged executive and advisory boards, and generous financial supporters willing to dream with us. Our graduates are already touching lives and teaching Torah in communities throughout North America.  After Maharat Rachel Kohl Finegold gave her first D’var Torah at Shaar Hashomayim in Montreal, Canada, women and men had tears in their eyes. One woman said, “I waited a lifetime to see a woman in a position of authority.”

Yeshivat Maharat is no longer a dream. It is an unassailable part of the Jewish landscape. Chalom Chalamti. I dreamt a dream, and it became a reality because of the many students, supporters, and advocates, who shared the dream for an Orthodox community where men and women could lead as full members of the clergy.

As we enter our eighth year, we are intent on growing our base of support by opening our doors to more students and friends. Please take the time to get to know us by perusing our website. And feel free to contact us with your questions.

We hope you will join us in further establishing and celebrating a new, more equitable era in Jewish history!

With warmest regards,
Rabba Sara Hurwitz
